About Ministry of Industry and Trade (MIT) Tanzania

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investments was established under the Government notice No. 144, published on 22ND April, 2016.  In 2019 the Investment department was shifted to Prime Minister’s Office and the ministry was declared as the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is mandated to formulate and monitor implementation of Policies on Industrial, Internal Trade, External trade, Marketing and Research.  The Ministry is also responsible for intellectual Property; Trade Practices Tribunal; Fair Competition Affairs; Marketing Intelligence and Trade Promotion; Export Promotion; Business Registration; Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Development; Trade Practices Bureau; Weight and Measures; Intra and Inter – Region Trade Market Research and Surveys; International Organization  relating to Industries and Trade; Performance Improvement and Development of Human Resources under this Ministry; and Ministerial Departments, Parastatal Organizations, Agencies, Programmes and Projects under this Ministry.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is one of the priority sectors in making the country to sustain lower middle and reach a middle income economy by 2025, and considering that the Ministry’s Stratergic Plan for 2021/22-2025/26 has been prepared in accordance with the following: Medium Term Strategic Planning and Budgeting Manual of the United Republic of Tanzania (2007 & 2010); The Tanzania Development Vision (Vision 2025); Five years Development Plan III (FYDP Three); CCM Election Manifesto 2020/25; Sustainable Development Goals; Tanzania Agro Processing Industries Development Flagship 2020 and Sector Policies.

Functions of the Ministry

In carrying out its mandate, the Ministry of Industry and Trade have a number of functions that are core to its activities and are geared towards ensuring the fulfillment of its Mission and the achievement of its Vision. The core functions of the Ministry include the following:

  1. Formulation, coordination, implementation and review of policies and strategies for the industry, trade, marketing development and promotion of SMEs sectors;
  2. Monitoring and evaluation of performance of industry, trade, marketing and SME sectors, industry and trade support institutions;
  3. Awareness creation and promotion of use of environmental friendly technologies;
  4. Collection, analysis and dissemination of information on industry, trade, marketing and SME sectors and creation of industry, trade, marketing and SME databases;
  5. Promotion of domestic and foreign investment, promotion of business support services and value addition and post-harvest management for enhancing public - private competitiveness in the industry, trade, marketing and SME sectors;
  6. Development and promotion of domestic and international trade;
  7. Improvement of the performance of human resources;
  8. Promotion and intellectual property rights;
  9. Facilitation of industry, trade, marketing and SME related infrastructure; and
  10. Facilitation of Research and Development
