Mbare is a high density southern suburb of Harare Zimbabwe. It was the first high density suburb (township) established in 1907 by the colonial government to provide accommodation to Africans staying in Harare. North Park School became apparent during 1968 and 1969 following the rapid development of private houses in the northern section of Mount Pleasant. In early 1969 a decision was taken by the Ministry of Education to build a school at the Groom-bridge site but when this became known by parents in the area of Northwood and Mount Pleasant Park, a request was made to re-consider the Groom-bridge decision to Dunkeld road site. In March 1969, the Regional Education Officer, Mr. A.H Siemens decided to carry out a census of the families in the Mount Pleasant area to help the Ministry of education to decide the most suitable site. Norman and Sybil Macdonald come from South Africa and previously ran another children's home in Zimbabwe.
